The old cables were run in metal conduits with Cloth insulation, after a good many years the cloth starts to break down and the conductors can touch the metal conduit, if you have a safety switch installed this will cause the switch to disconnect the power, if you don’t have a Safety switch this could cause a potential fire or become hazardous to persons should they come into contact with the livened metal conduit.
